A possible meteor entering the atmosphere has caused a loud 'bang' heard by several residents in WA's Goldfields on Thursday evening.
Residents in Kalgoorlie-Boulder, 600km east of Perth, heard the bang just after 9.30pm, as a quick flash lit up the sky.
Perth Observatory's Matt Woods said the flash captured by CCTV was likely caused by a meteor.
“It’s been quite unusual this year, I think this must have been the fifth or sixth meteor that’s come over Western Australia,” Mr Woods said.
He said the bang was likely due to a build up of friction heating up the meteor, causing it to explode as it entered the atmosphere.
“Sometimes they can literally just blow themselves to bits, or burn up completely, and they’re just dust that gets kept up in the atmosphere," Mr Woods said.
