New weather maps have turned a grisly red and yellow as a band of rain steers towards the UK - where at one point it will stretch across nearly the entire country

UK snow will be accompanied by a wall of intense rain, new weather maps suggest, as wintry conditions - including minus temperatures - persist into the weekend.

Snow has fallen deep over parts of the country over the last two days, with some locations seeing as much as 7cm as temperatures reach desperate lows. The at times intense snowfall is set to continue into this evening, mainly over high ground, maps show, and in scattered spells off the southwest coast before dissipating over water in the early hours of Friday.
