“What makes the Notre Dame fight song particularly good? … I don’t know, it's just kind of filled with rich tradition like we were talking about.”
SCHOOLS’ BANDS PERFORM THEIR FIGHT SONGS BEFORE AND AFTER GAMES.
AND MANY TIMES DURING.
SOUNDBITE (English) Miguel Retto, Michigan Marching Band drum major:
“Yeah, so, in the Michigan Marching Band, we have so many opportunities to play ‘The Victors.’ … Do I ever get sick of it? Answer is ‘no.’ I love it every single time, never gets old.”
“THE VICTORS” HAS BEEN A PART OF THE MICHIGAN STADIUM SOUNDTRACK FOR DECADES.
SOUNDBITE (English) John Pasquale, Michigan Marching Band director:
“It's a part of our almost DNA in a way. It's our identity. It's a rally cry.”
AND ACCORDING TO SMITH, IT CAN BE USED TO TROLL A CERTAIN RIVAL FANBASE TO THE SOUTH.
SOUNDBITE (English) Chad Smith, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer:
“In Columbus, Ohio, and the Chili Peppers would play concerts there. Myself and Anthony (Kiedis), our singer, are big U of M supporters. … And so, at the end of the concert, I came out, I said, ‘Hey, I think we got time for one more song. You guys want to hear one more song?’ And they're like, ‘Yay, OK, great.’ And I'm like, ‘It's a really good song. I think you're really going to like this one.’ ‘Oh, yay.’ (Starts singing) ‘Hail to The Victors.’ ‘Booooooooo!’ They screamed louder than they screamed all night. It was great. I sang it all. (More singing) ‘The champions of the West.’ Mic drop, off the stage.”
