Police investigating the alleged murder of an Adelaide father-of-two say they have now found a ute that was captured on CCTV at the site where the victim's body was discovered, describing the development as a "significant breakthrough".

Moana man Chris Robertson was found dead at a Lonsdale premises on September 30, three days after he was last seen seen alive celebrating with friends on the AFL Grand Final weekend.

Police said a post-mortem examination revealed the 49-year-old died "as a result of injuries sustained during a severe assault".

Last month, they revealed they were searching for a grey Mitsubishi Triton utility they said was captured on CCTV at the Lonsdale workshop the day after Mr Robertson was last seen.
