Tania Madley was unable to complete her journey to see her little great-granddaughter as she was knocked down by a driver in Newport, south Wales, and left for dead

A woman was left for dead by a hit-and-run driver on her way to see her baby great-granddaughter for the first time.

Tania Madley was mowed down moments after leaving her home for the momentous journey. The driver opened his door to say: "I'm so sorry, love, I'm sorry" — then he fled the scene in Newport, south Wales .

Paramedics discovered Ms Madley, 60, stricken in the road and treated her for severe bruising. She was lucky to escape without further serious wounds, her family say.
