There will be “no limit” to council tax increases under new plans announced by Labour, Conservatives said today. Labour was accused of “a nakedly political cash grab built on a plot for soaring council tax bills across England”. It comes after Communities Secretary Steve Reed announced a new funding system which will cut the amount of cash central government provides to wealthier regions of England.

Areas with the highest levels of deprivation, and those unable to collect high levels of council tax, will get more. And councils “facing significant local financial difficulty” will be allowed to apply for an exemption from current rules that effectively ban them from increasing council tax by more than 5% each year.
