On February 9, 1959, Anna Chandy made history by becoming the first Indian woman to serve as a judge in a high court. She was appointed as a judge of the Kerala High Court and held the position for more than eight years, until April 5, 1967.

Born in 1905 in the Kingdom of Travancore, now known as Kerala, Chandy grew up in a Syrian Christian family in Thiruvananthapuram. She graduated from the Government Law College in 1926, becoming the first woman in Kerala to earn a law degree.

Beginning her career in 1929, she practiced as a barrister, focusing on criminal law, and gained notable recognition for her work.

Dedicated to advancing women’s rights, Chandy fought for equal employment opportunities for women. She publicly challenged her peers, including prominent intellectuals like TK Vellu
