Over half of the population suffers from health issues linked to unhealthy diets, according to the 2024 report published by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The findings show that 56.4% of India's total disease burden is linked to poor dietary habits.

The ICMR experts say the problem comes from changes in people's eating and lifestyle habits. The study reports that many are now consuming more processed foods, which contain added sugar and unhealthy fats.

At the same time, physical activity levels have decreased, and access to nutrient-rich foods remains limited. These habits are driving a rise in serious non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including obesity, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension, the study stated.
