Ohio legislators have a chance to make eye care more accessible and affordable by passing Senate Bill 36, also called the Primary Eye Care Modernization Bill. This bill would allow doctors of optometry to perform three simple laser treatments and remove small, harmless bumps from the eyelids.
These are safe, common procedures that all optometry students currently learn in school. In fact, eye doctors in 24 other states, including Kentucky, Virginia and Indiana, are already allowed to do them.
It’s important to know that Senate Bill 36 does not permit optometrists to do major eye procedures like LASIK, cataract and retinal surgery or to remove cancerous growths. Those surgeries will still only be done by ophthalmologists. The procedures included in this bill are quick, performed in the
