Usman Khawaja has copped a wave of criticism for his untimely stint off the field during the opening day of the Ashes, but Cricket Australia insist it was for a legitimate ailment.

After rolling England for 172 in 32.5 overs at Perth Stadium on Friday, Australia were dealt a shock when told Khawaja wasn't allowed to open due to spending too long off the field at the end of the innings.

Khawaja had gone off twice due to back stiffness, with CA stating the 38-year-old suffered back spasms the second time he went off.

In the midst of England losing 5-12 in the space of three overs at the end of their innings, Australia skipper Steve Smith was seen motioning urgently for Khawaja to come back on.
