Cambridge has made local headlines this year for eliminating single-family zoning and for a planned rezoning of two main thoroughfares to allow for denser development. But Cambridge also has been named worst in the nation when it comes to red tape for project permitting.

Of 500 U.S. cities studied, Cambridge was dead last on a so-called "Red Tape Index" by AI firm Labrynth on Thursday.
