If you’re lucky enough to have a Christmas cactus , you know how cheerful its red, pink, or purple blooms can be during the holidays. But if your plant isn’t flowering this year, you may be wondering what happened. The secret to getting those signature blooms is giving your plant the right kind of rest.

“Typically, the reason your Christmas cactus won’t bloom is that it hasn’t had the cool, dark rest period it needs to trigger flowers,” says Tammy Sons, founder and CEO of TN Nursery. “I've found that six to eight weeks of nighttime temperatures hovering around 60°F and about 12 to 14 hours of darkness is about right.”
