An aquarium in Chicago has a new resident, but it's not a fish. It's a sloth.

Officials at the Shedd Aquarium say the Linné’s two-toed sloth is named Alface -- pronounced al-FAH-see -- and she arrived in September.

Officials say they hope she can be an ambassador for her species and help guests learn about the Amazon River Basin in the Amazon Rainforest, where Linné’s two-toed sloths live. Shedd has a section dedicated to animals from the Amazon Rainforest.

Alface was born at Dallas Zoo in 2023. Her name means “lettuce” in Portuguese, which was the first solid food she ate as a baby. Portuguese is also the language primarily spoken in her native range in South America.

Her diet also includes a variety of greens, vegetables and fruits.
