Prakazrel “Pras” Samuel Michel, a founding member of the Fugees, has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison after being convicted in 2023 on 10 counts tied to a political influence and money-laundering scheme. Prosecutors said that Michel funneled millions into foreign money through a Malaysian financier into former president Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign using what’s known as a straw donation, and later attempted to obstruct a Justice Department investigation.
Michel’s charges include acting as an unregistered foreign agent, tampering with witnesses and lying to federal investigators. While the original guidelines suggested that Michael could receive a lifetime sentence for the crimes, the judge ruled that Michel would serve the current sentence, plus three years’ probation.
