Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said Friday that U.S. President Donald Trump's plan to end the conflict in Ukraine would deter European nations from their "war intentions."
Speaking to Hungary’s state broadcaster, Orbán welcomed a new 28-point draft proposal and said the next two or three weeks would be "decisive" in the U.S. administration's push to end the fighting.
Orbán claimed that European nations are intent on seeking war with Russia, and sharply criticized the E.U. for its plans to finance Ukraine's budget and military for the next two years.
He added that Trump's peace plan, if successful, could interrupt those efforts.
"The ceasefire or peace proposed by the U.S. to end the Russia-Ukraine war is no longer just about saving lives perishing on the Russian-Ukrainian front," he said.
"It is no longer just about not continuing to burn money unnecessarily in an unwinnable war. It is also about deterring the Europeans from their war intentions."
According to Orbán, Trump's peace proposal was an important step toward organizing a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest - a potential summit that Trump announced last month but was later scuttled due to the inflexibility of Russia's war demands, officials said.
Orbán, Hungary’s populist prime minister, stands out among European leaders with having close relationships with both Putin and Trump.
