WASHINGTON — Rep. Eric Swalwell is joining the crowded field to succeed California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The seven-term Democratic congressman who represents California’s 14th congressional district made the announcement Thursday evening during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Swalwell, who supported Kimmel during his suspension back in September, joked that President Donald Trump “was not going to like this show.”

“I love California. It’s the greatest country in the world,” Swalwell said. “But that’s why it pisses me off to see Californians running through the fields where they work from ICE agents, or troops in our streets. It’s horrifying. Or cancer research being cut. Our state, this great state, needs a fighter and a protector, someone who will bring prices down, lift wages up.”
