CLEVELAND, Ohio — As Cuyahoga County Council revisits “pay-to-stay” protections for tenants who fall behind on rent and face eviction, Ohio lawmakers are considering a separate proposal that could prevent the eviction filing in the first place – potentially reshaping the eviction landscape statewide.
County Council President Dale Miller last week reintroduced legislation that would allow tenants facing eviction for late rent to remain in their homes if they pay all rent owed, plus reasonable late fees and court costs, before an eviction judgment. Supporters say the measure would prevent unnecessary evictions and keep families stable, especially in cases where renters can quickly get caught up.
