JD Vance has publicly criticized Canada’s immigration policies, labeling them as "immigration insanity." His remarks came in response to a post on X that highlighted Canada’s declining living standards. The original post included a graph from Ice Cap Asset Management, illustrating changes in GDP per person for Canada, the U.K., and the U.S. Vance stated, "While I’m sure the causes are complicated, no nation has leaned more into ‘diversity is our strength, we don’t need a melting pot we have a salad bowl’ immigration insanity than Canada." He noted that Canada has the highest percentage of foreign-born residents in the G7, while its living standards have stagnated. According to the 2021 census, nearly one in four people in Canada, or 23 percent, are immigrants. This marks the highest percentage in 150 years and the largest among G7 countries. The Canadian government maintains that immigration has been vital to the country's development and will continue to be essential for its future. In a follow-up post, Vance addressed his Canadian audience, saying, "And with all due respect to my Canadian friends, whose politics focus obsessively on the United States: your stagnating living standards have nothing to do with Donald Trump or whatever bogeyman the CBC tells you to blame. The fault lies with your leadership, elected by you." The relationship between the U.S. and Canada has been tense, particularly since former President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canadian imports and referred to Canada as the 51st state. Although the heated exchanges have lessened recently, the dynamic between Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney remains strained. Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party, echoed Vance's sentiments by sharing the same graph about Canada’s economic challenges. He criticized Carney, stating, "Mark Carney is importing to Canada the same financial disaster that he caused in the U.K. as Bank Governor there. Wherever he shows up, inflation goes up, paychecks shrink, housing costs balloon, and living standards collapse. That’s the cost of Carney." As discussions about immigration and economic policy continue, both Vance and Poilievre highlight concerns regarding the impact of current leadership on Canada’s future.
