The world's oldest pygmy hippopotamus celebrated its 52nd birthday with a Hungry Hungry Hippos-themed party.
Born on November 22, 1973, Hannah Shirley has lived at the San Diego Humane Society since 2002 after being rescued from a private backyard in Escondido, California.
Hannah surpassed the previous longevity record earlier this year, officially becoming the oldest pygmy hippo ever in managed care worldwide.
The species typically lives 25 to 30 years in the wild.
After celebrating her milestone, Hannah enjoyed a festive Hungry Hungry Hippos-themed party complete with floating fruit treats and colorful decorations inspired by the children’s game.
San Diego Humane Society’s Project Wildlife team, which has cared for Hannah since 2002, joined in the celebration along
