The Great Lakes water levels continue to fall. Here’s a look at the current levels, and the forecast into next year.
The Great Lakes water levels declining right now is entirely normal. In fall and winter we enter a period where the precipitation melts to less liquid than heavy spring and summer rains. We also are in a time period when evaporation is the highest all year.
The lack of water coming into the Great Lakes now and the evaporation taking a lot of water out combine for a decline of water levels.
Here’s a graph of the current water level and a range of forecast solutions into next year. The forecast was produced by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
There are a few key indicators on the graph above. Let me walk you through them.
