NEW YORK —
The top dog breed in the country is the French bulldog, beating the Labrador retriever for the third straight year, according to annual data released by the American Kennel Club.
The AKC uses its registration statistics to rank the breeds. It says it's the world's largest registry of purebred dogs.
Frenchies have been on a steady rise since they came in 11th place in 2013. The dachshund also had a notable boost during the 2020s and currently sits in sixth place.
The dogs that make up the top five — the French bulldog, Labrador retriever, golden retriever, German shepherd and poodle — have been the same for the past four years, and speak to the popularity of certain breeds.
