The Income Tax Department is set to roll out PAN 2.0, an upgraded version of the 10-digit alphanumeric Permanent Account Number (PAN), aimed at making it the primary identifier for individuals and businesses. The enhancements include a QR code on all PAN cards, a fully online application process, and the consolidation of existing identification numbers under PAN, according to reports.

The Union Cabinet recently approved the PAN 2.0 project to establish PAN as a central repository of accurate data and ensure consistency. Existing PAN cards will remain valid under the new system. Indian PAN holders can request a reprint of their PAN card with a QR code for a fee of Rs 50. The updated card will be dispatched to the taxpayer’s registered address or email after any corrections to PAN records.
