MANCHESTER, N.H. —

A Dartmouth Health doctor is warning that an herbal supplement for sale at most gas stations can come with a high risk of addiction for some users.

Dr. Cornel Stanciu is calling for more oversight of kratom, a widely available product that some people use for a quick energy boost.

"It's a plant that's indigenous to Southeast Asia, and it's been used for centuries," Stanciu said.

Stanciu, an expert on kratom, said kratom products can include synthetic compounds. He said it acts as a stimulant at low doses or an opioid at high doses, and some users can develop dependence.
