Cooking delicious food is a priority for Thanksgiving, but Reno fire marshal John Beck warns residents to never leave dishes unattended.
The turkey probably won't run away, but a stove, oven, microwave or turkey fryer can start a fire if cooks aren't prepared.
Beck says people do three times more cooking on Thanksgiving than any other day. With increased cooking, open flames and heating units can raise the risk of a fire.
"Especially with the turkeys, they take a while to cook," Beck said. "We want to be very, very mindful."
How can you properly deep fry a turkey?
If residents do decide their turkeys taste better fried, Beck says fryers should always be used outdoors, on a solid, level surface and a safe distance from buildings and flammable materials.
