What a steaming heap of political posturing/fence-sitting Lorne Gunter delivered in his column today regarding Smith’s use of the notwithstanding clause. While he isn’t “completely in line” with the UCP on transgender laws, he’s “not vehemently opposed” to them either. That much wriggling while sitting on the fence has to be uncomfortable. Lorne misses the point. Use of the notwithstanding clause subverts negotiating, consensus-building. You better believe if this were used to put through gun control legislation, Lorne would be vaulting from the fence.
