BASTROP, Texas — Starting next school year, foreign exchange students may be banned from playing any varsity sport in Texas high schools. The University Interscholastic League’s (UIL) Legislative Council approved this rule change last month.
Host families and students weigh in
For host parent Todd Garrett, the experience of sharing Texas culture with exchange students is about helping them try everything the state has to offer. “So, we've already done Enchanted Rock and we'll do roller derby, we’re going to Austin FC.”
Garrett is currently hosting 17-year-old Vilmer Jigen from Sweden, who has quickly become a part of the Cedar Creek High School community. “He's extremely outgoing. He makes friends very easily, and he's a smart kid. Right now he has all A's,” Garrett said.
