WASHINGTON — Last week, Congress passed a bill with language from Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., that bans hemp products with anything but a small amount of THC, the psychoactive component in cannabis.
Jim Higdon, co-founder of the Louisville-based Cornbread Hemp , said that would effectively make all its products, including hemp-derived CBD and THC gummies and seltzers, Schedule I narcotics.
The new hemp provision limits any product to .4 milligrams of THC per container.
Higdon was on Capitol Hill this week meeting with members of Kentucky’s congressional delegation to try to find a path forward.
The legislation includes a one-year delay before it’s implemented, and Higdon said the clock is ticking.
He is pushing for an extension.
