GRAND FORKS — On Nov. 8, 2005, against then-Sioux Falls College, Dennis Hutter won his first game as head coach of women’s basketball at Mayville State. Twenty years later, he was staring down a winless start through five games in his new gig at UND.
Friday against Wyoming at the Betty, he got his first again — a 65-45 win against the Cowgirls, picked 6th in the Mountain West preseason poll.
While it is an accomplishment for Hutter, he’s quick to give credit to the players. Starting the year the way the program did can be a test of character, which Hutter says was on display against Wyoming.
