MIFFLINBURG — “It was beautiful,” the auctioneer said when asked how what is billed as the world’s biggest live Christmas tree auction went.
Neil Courtney did not have final figures but the manager of the Buffalo Valley Produce Auction in Union County estimates more than 40,000 live Christmas trees were sold Friday.
The number of trees available for auction was down from last year but the quality was good, he said.
Prices were up over 2024 , with Courtney noting the wholesale price for a 7-foot Fraser fir was $62 this year compared with $40 last year.
That does not mean retail prices will increase proportionally, he said. Last year’s low prices were an anomaly and retailers did not lower their prices accordingly, he said.
