The holiday season in downtown Detroit unofficially started at 7:18 p.m. Friday, when thousands of sparkling LED lights came on the 62-foot Norway spruce in Campus Martius.
Santa Claus himself led the countdown on a cool, but not too cold evening, joined by an estimated 115,000 cheering Detroiters and visitors who enjoyed food, drink, entertainment and shopping as part of the Downtown Detroit Partnership's 22nd year hosting the annual event.
