Alappuzha: “Legally, in every document I am a woman — in voter list, Aadhaar, election identity card, everything. I completed my gender affirmation surgery six years ago. I live as a woman. Not a single document identifies me as transgender. Then why this false propaganda?” said transwoman Arunima M Kurup after filing her nomination as the Congress candidate for the Vayalar division of the Alappuzha District Panchayat.

There had been a campaign claiming a transgender person cannot contest from a seat reserved for women. When she arrived at the Collectorate on Friday to file her nomination, someone said that it might get rejected. This distressed Arunima greatly, prompting her to clarify her stand to the media.
