LA PUENTE — In 1935, the U.S. was in the middle of the Great Depression. The Spanish Civil War was raging, the Nuremberg Laws were enacted, Italy invaded Ethiopia, “It Happened One Night” won the Academy Award and the Montebello High football program made its only appearance in a CIF championship game, where it lost in what was then known as the Small School Division.
Ninety years later, the Oilers (7-6) are on their way back after a wild 43-36 victory over La Puente in a CIF-Southern Section Division 13 semifinal on Friday night.
Montebello led by as much as 15 points in the first half but needed a 3-yard run by Donovan Murillo with 44 seconds left in the game to secure the historic win.
The Oilers will host Woodbridge in the championship game next Friday.
Murillo rushed for 264 yards
