I TRULY don’t like the feel of this. I expected the third act of my life would be lived under increasingly multicultural conditions. Not chilly prohibitions against the wretched of the world, making their integration into societies on these islands ever less possible.
So, following the draconian asylum and migrant measures suggested by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood this week, are we now to regard those black and brown among us, in our streets and shops, as a class of citizen apart?
You may build a life from work, taxes and family. But now you live with the decades-long possibility of deportation back to unliveable conditions, whether economic, environmental or tyrannical (or all three). You’re almost literally flickering on the pavements before us: here but not quite, not really here.
