Donald Trump has told Ukraine to accept a US-backed peace deal by Thursday despite Volodymyr Zelensky warning his country it would strip them of their “dignity”.
The 28-point plan parrots key Russian demands and would force Ukraine to cede territory it currently controls, slash the size of its military to 600,000 and renounce ambitions to join Nato.
Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev spent three days with Trump envoy Steve Witkoff in Miami thrashing out the plan according to reports, raising fears the deal has been set up to suit the Kremlin.
On Friday night, US army secretary Daniel Driscoll met western ambassadors in Kyiv to insist there was no room for negotiation at a volatile meeting described by one European official as “nauseating” , the Financial Times reports.
