BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - Vermont’s congressional delegation joined the governor on this day in history to celebrate the re-authorization of the Northeast Dairy Compact with a ceremonial milk toast.

The compact allowed New England states to require processors to pay farmers more for their milk. The compact faced significant opposition before it was passed in 1997, and it didn’t last long; Congress eliminated the compact in 2001.
