A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a "serious incident" at a property. Emergency services were called to the scene on Durham Street in the Elswick area of Newcastle at around 6pm on Friday evening.

Northumbria Police said a man and a woman, both in their 60s, were taken to hospital. The woman sustained severe head injuries, and remains in hospital in critical condition.
