U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement came close this month to deporting a Native American woman from Des Moines who was serving jail time for driving with her license suspended.
That it didn’t come to pass was thanks to her family’s urgent appeals, in person and on social media, to correct what was a case of mistaken identity. That it otherwise would have highlights some of the fallout of President Donald Trump’s war on immigrants, the Iowa governor’s insistence on being a part of that, and the dangers of racial profiling.
