Chennai woke up to a violent police encounter in the early hours of Saturday after a 21-year-old history-sheeter — accused in the brutal murder of a rival — was shot in the leg while allegedly attacking a police constable and attempting to escape near the Indira Nagar MRTS station.

The suspect, Vijayakumar (21) of Vishalakshi Thottam, Abiramapuram, had been on the run since the savage killing of 24-year-old rowdy Mouli two days earlier.

A special team led by Mylapore Inspector Ambedkar had been combing the city through the night, tracking accused linked to the Mandaveli murder that had rattled the locality.

Mouli — a ‘C’-category rowdy with four pending cases — was hacked to death in cold blood by a six-member bike-borne gang on Thursday evening. A call driver and resident of the TNUHDB
