Ministers could halt the BBC licence fee's next scheduled increase, according to reports. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy must decide by February whether to approve the upcoming adjustment to the licence fee.

Under existing arrangements, the fee rises annually in line with inflation until 2027. The anticipated increase was expected to reflect September's inflation rate of 3.8 per cent, which would add approximately £7 to the current cost.

Should the rise proceed, a standard colour television licence would increase to just over £181 from spring. The Telegraph reports Ms Nandy is "weighing up" whether to permit the inflation-linked increase, though sources close to the Culture Secretar
