Iowa City, Iowa — The key, Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith said amid his team’s seven-game losing streak, was to get Saturday’s game at Iowa to the fourth quarter without facing a blowout.
When his team did get to the final frame at Kinnick Stadium, the Spartans had more than survived — they led by two scores. But surviving the fourth quarter proved too much. Michigan State blew a 10-point lead to lose, 20-17, on a 44-yard walk-off field goal by Iowa kicker Drew Stevens.
