CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - A Cedar Rapids church distributed 200 free turkeys to community members Saturday afternoon as part of its third annual Thanksgiving giveaway.

Lifeline Ministries on Oakland Road Northeast drew a long line of people before the giveaway began at noon. Volunteers distributed about 100 turkeys within the first 10 minutes, with a steady stream of recipients continuing throughout the afternoon.

Shekita Tolbert helped coordinate the distribution and waved down passing traffic to let them know of the free food.

“My energy, I work at a school so I’ve been like this all my life, literally all my life. Energy, it comes natural,” Tolbert said.

Church members said they are seeing increased need and uncertainty in the community this year.
