WALNUT — Maximo Zavaleta made the turn for home Saturday morning inside Mt. San Antonio College’s Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
A second consecutive CIF Southern Section Division 1 individual championship was all but assured for King’s senior boys cross country standout.
But Zavaleta looked up at the clock and made one final burst toward the finish. And at the end, Zavaleta even did a sprinter’s lean when he crossed the line.
“The goal for this race to was get after it and try to go below 14 (minutes),” Zavaleta said. “I’ve done it before, but doing it here today would be special.”
Those kicks and lean paid off for Zavaleta, who defended his Division 1 title with a winning time of 13 minutes, 59.9 seconds on the Mt. SAC rain course. That was the fastest time across all divisions Saturday morni
