A protest dubbed one of Tasmania's biggest in years has urged undecided politicians to turf plans for a contentious AFL stadium at a looming vote.

The state's upper house will determine on December 3 and 4 whether to green light the $1.13 billion waterfront venue at Macquarie Point in Hobart.

Construction of a roofed stadium at the site is a condition of the Tasmania Devils entering the AFL and AFLW in 2028.

Thousands protested outside parliament on Sunday, with speakers calling on a handful of undecided independent MPs who hold the future of the stadium in their hands to vote it down.

A pro-stadium protest is planned on the same lawns next Sunday, showing the depth of community sentiment on both sides of the debate.
