BOISE, Idaho — The Boise Bicycle Project is preparing for its 19th annual Holiday Kids Bike Giveaway, an event that has grown dramatically since it began in 2007, when just 50 children received refurbished bikes.
This year, the nonprofit expects to provide dream bikes to about 650 children — its largest group to date — as demand for access to affordable transportation continues to rise.
Executive Director Devin McComas said the numbers highlight a growing need in the community.
“We are mission-bound to make sure that bicycles are accessible to everyone in our community. And you’re seeing, if we have 641 kids signed up, you’re seeing that there’s more need and there are more people who have less access to bicycles than ever.
