Delhi’s Air Quality Index remains in the 'very poor' category.

Poor air quality especially from pollutants like particulate matter (PM), ozone, and nitrogen dioxide increases the risk of respiratory infections by damaging lung tissue, causing inflammation, and weakening the immune system. This makes people more vulnerable to viruses (such as influenza, RSV, and COVID-19) and bacteria, leading to more severe illnesses, hospitalizations, and complications like pneumonia and bronchitis. Pollutants can trigger inflammatory responses, alter gene expression in ways that facilitate viral entry into cells, and impair the ability of immune cells to fight pathogens.
