The UK Government has said the tax system for all motorists needs to be 'fair' - including electric vehicle owners.

There has been widespread speculation a new pay-per-mile scheme will be introduced to target EV drivers.

While petrol and diesel drivers pay fuel duty, EV drivers do not.

As more people switch to EVs, governments around the world will see their income from fuel duty plummet, which means they will need to find new ways to raise funds.

Transport secretary Heidi Alexander made the comments on the BBC's Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg show as she was asked about the possible introduction of a pay-per-mile scheme.
