A 2,000-year-old crystal jar, thought to be among the most mysterious pieces in the Galloway Hoard, has gone on public display in Scotland for the first time.
The small vessel - carved from rock crystal and finished with intricate gold filigree - is now a standout feature of the new exhibition at Kirkcudbright Galleries .
Though striking in appearance, the jar’s true intrigue lies in its survival, having been discovered hidden inside layers of linen, placed within a silk-lined leather pouch and sealed within a larger container alongside more than two dozen prized objects.
