Millions of Thanksgiving travelers could face disruptions this week as a massive coast-to-coast storm brings heavy rain and gusty winds.

According to the National Weather Service, rain is expected to arrive in the Northeast early Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 25, and last through just past midnight on Wednesday, Nov. 26.

The system is part of a powerful cross-country storm that has already brought severe weather, including downpours and damaging winds, to other parts of the US.

AccuWeather meteorologists warn that the storm could cause significant travel delays, with rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds impacting flights and road conditions during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) estimates that 82 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Thanksgiving holiday period — a record-breaking number.

The storm is expected to shift into the Midwest and Southwest on Monday, Nov. 24, before arriving in the Northeast midday Tuesday. Rain from the system will taper off early Wednesday morning, just in time for Thanksgiving Eve travelers.

Blustery but calmer weather will return to the region on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 27, with partly to mostly sunny skies and temperatures near 50 degrees.

The National Weather Service notes that temperatures will remain near normal through the end of November in much of the Northeast.

While the storm threatens to complicate early-week travel plans, AccuWeather says conditions will settle later in the week, providing relief for those traveling closer to Thanksgiving Day.
