PHOENIX — Two people were left dead after a car crashed into them at a high speed early Saturday morning in south Phoenix, according to authorities.

A two-man patrol unit of the Phoenix Police Department responded around 1:35 a.m. to “a large fire” near the intersection of Baseline Road and Central Avenue.

The unit, while parked in a neighborhood near the intersection, had seen a car driving “north at a high rate of speed” just prior to the flames becoming visible. Upon arrival, the police found two vehicles had crashed into the Valley Metro light rail platform at Baseline/Central Ave.

Phoenix police were able to extinguish the fire, but both individuals who had been struck by the oncoming vehicle were pronounced dead on the scene.
