LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Stitch Guillory is warning citizens of a scam that has resurfaced in the area where scammers falsely claim to represent a bonding company.

Guillory says the scammer contacts family members of incarcerated individuals and offers them a smaller fine to bond their family member out of jail.

The caller may provide a local address and phone number in an attempt to look legitimate, Guillory says.

“Most recent callers report that the scammer is pretending to be a deputy with CPSO and gives the victim information on the arrestees charges, which they likely obtained by looking online,” Guillory stated.

The caller may also ask the victim to pay the fee using cryptocurrency or money transfer services, such as Zelle or Cash App.
